Reviews for Song

'Three actors recount the disjointed memories and thoughts of one man deep in despair, heading for self-destruction. One word of advice, then: do not see this if you are feeling a bit down yourself, as this could throw you over the edge. This is harrowing and dark, but serves as an atmospheric and deeply haunting tale of revenge and desperation, the well performed and chilling monologues exerting a powerful hold over the audience...' Audience Reviews for Song

'Sitting in a well-populated audience, a few feet from the stage, I felt like a lone voyeur observing something intensely private and painful. Locking you into the world of a young man whose imminent mental breakdown provides the arc of the story, Song drags you through a mire of emotions with passion and considerable grace. The stark staging provides little distraction from the intensity of the drama, adding to the sense of isolation tangible among both actors and audience. Though never a comfortable experience, it is a challenging and compelling one that warrants more than one viewing.'

'Song is a sharp-edged drama in which three actors, nameless and black-clad, triangulate around a single prop: a cast-iron bathtub that in the course of the play starts to take on a fateful look. We see most of the action as if in retrospect or through a heavy pane of glass, narrated and re-enacted by the disturbed protagonist as he relates to returning figures from his past. Although this would seem to run the risk of being self-indulgently meta-theatrical, the performance is effective, offering a front-row view of one man's vicious struggle for control. Steve King's performance is compelling. I was in the front row at the Corpus Playroom, and at one point he fixed me with a death-look for what felt like several minutes, before I started trying to shuffle out of my seat. Triangle drama though it is, the success of the play rests on him, and he rises to the occasion. Moving between hysteria and catatonic calm, dreaminess and sharpness, Song is a paranoid chant to make you edge back in your seat.' E. Kvistad
